Sydney Sweeney’s Family Had a Surprising Reaction to Her Role in Euphoria
Most parents support their children’s careers, but there are certain boundaries they won’t cross—especially when it comes to watching them in explicit roles.
If you’ve seen Euphoria, you know it’s packed with intense themes like drug use and sex, making it the kind of show most people would avoid watching with family. But what if your child was one of the stars?
That’s exactly the situation Sydney Sweeney’s family found themselves in.
Sweeney, now a rising star in Hollywood, gained recognition for her role in the hit HBO series, but Euphoria came with its own set of challenges. Beyond the risqué scenes, she had to work twice as hard to land roles that showed her versatility as an actress.
Speaking to Variety, Sweeney revealed that she had to prove herself to casting directors who only saw her as her Euphoria character.
“It’s the ones I have to fight for that usually are the ones that I want, like Reality,” she said. “I had to audition for it. I had to put myself on tape and send in my audition just like everybody else.”
She faced similar struggles when auditioning for The White Lotus.
“They didn’t think that I was right for White Lotus, because I did Euphoria. So I put myself on tape, I auditioned just like everybody else, and had a callback like everybody else.”
While Sweeney was working hard to break industry perceptions, her family was dealing with a different challenge—actually watching Euphoria.
In an interview on Sunday Today with Willie Geist, she shared how some of her family members, including her dad, were completely unprepared for her role.
“My mom visited me on set at the time, so she knew the story and I talked to her a lot about it—my dad didn’t,” she admitted. “Yeah, I didn’t prepare my dad. At all.”
Not only did her dad decide to watch the show without warning, but he did so with his own parents—without knowing what to expect.
“I mean, how do you bring it up in conversation?” she joked. “And also, when I talk to my dad, it’s usually not about work. We talk, like, father-daughter conversations.”
As you might imagine, it didn’t go well.
“My dad and my grandpa turned it off and walked out,” Sweeney revealed.
But not everyone in the family was as shocked.
“My grandma is a big supporter of mine. She’s a big fan. Actually, I bring her all over the world to my different sets and I make her an extra.”
It turns out, you really can’t win them all!
